Galéria Jozefa Kollára - Banská Štiavnica

Jozefa Kollár Gallery

21Sep

Jozef Kollár Art Gallery offers a permanent exhibition of visual art from 13th to 20th centuries from the region of Banská Štiavnica, along with other seasonal exhibitions. The quality of the art displayed goes beyond the regional framework. The gallery is situated at Holy Trinity Square (Námestie svätej Trojice).

Exhibitions focus on the mining craft in Slovakia, social themes and landscapes of Banská Štiavnica, with the emphasis on the work of Edmund Gwerk and Jozef Kollár. The art-historical collection is comprised of 4,600 showpieces from the medieval period up to the end of the 20th century. Works found in the gallery are considered to be not only the most valuable collections of Banská Štiavnica but also treasures of the central European art. Among these are neo-Gothic wooden sculptures of St. Barbara and St. Catherine, which illustrate the importance and prosperity of Banská Štiavnica in around 1500. Their authorship is credited to the phenomenal Master M.S., whose identity hasn’t yet been explained conclusively.

Apart from the permanent exhibition “Treasures of the old art” (Poklady starého umenia), the gallery hosts about 5 exhibitions a year. They tend to involve jubilees of artists, mining themes, and old as well as contemporary art.
