Sitno - Banská Štiavnica

Trip to Sitno, Počúvadlo lake

Every visitor of this region should take a trip to Počúvadlo and Sitno. The shortest, steepest and most popular trail to Sitno Hill is from Počúvadlo Lake. It is approximately 3 km long with elevation gain of 150 m and takes around 2 hours. It can be managed by children and older hikers. Its description is in the text.

If you decide to walk to Sitno on foot from Banská Štiavnica, you can take the red trail that begins on Town Hall Square and continues under Klinger reservoir. In the saddle of Krížna, start following the blue trail in direction to Sitno.

You can also take the yellow trail from the saddle of Krížna, which leads around Počúvadlo Lake and from there along the most popular route to Sitno Hill – the green trail to the Tatar Meadow (906 m. a. s. l.) and from there along the blue trail across the Elova Crevice in between andesitic rocks, all the way to the top meadow plateau. At the Tatar Meadow, with a strong presence of wild roses, begins an educational trail with 13 stops.

A less steep, but longer trail leads from the village of Ilija. The trails are described on information boards in Ilija and near Počúvadlo Lake.

Ideal for families with small children or a baby stroller is the trail from Svätý Anton that leads quite a long distance up (to a ramp) on an asphalt road accessible by car. From there, the route to the top takes less than an hour. The hardly noticeable diversion (in direction Banská Štiavnica) is to be found behind the last houses in the village on the right-hand side. The diversion is indicated on the municipality’s information leaflet as well as on the information board at the parking lot near the manor house.

Vein Terezia

The gold-silver vein is the westernmost of the main Stiavnica Veins. Probably it was the first mining vein in Banska Stiavnica. We can see it from the village Banska Bela to Windsachta in the village Stiavnicke Bane. It is about 5 kilometers long and goes from northeast to southwest. A slope of the vein is gradually changing from 70° to 90°. Its average thickness is 1-1,5m.

This vein is developed mainly in andezits, less in silica – diorite porphyrs or to their common contacts and in deeper parts of granodiorit too.

The venous filling is made by silica, often with large hematite impregnation in older associations. The upper parts of the vein contained an increased amound of gold in the past. The southern parts of the vein were rich in silver ores.

The vein comes to the surface in the castern slopes of Mount Paradajs and Tanad.

We can begin a journey of vein in the suddle Red Well where the oldest estatablished educational path begins / starts / – Educational path of Milan Kapusta through Vein Terezia. It is the oldest educational path in Slovakia. The educational path has 16 information boards. If we walk in his footsteps we will discover some place where the vein comes to the surface. One of these place indicates the coordinates.
